- Abstract
The Loess Plateau has been suffering from seriousgravity erosion because of the fragmented and complicated topography, great elevation variations, thick soil layer and their poor morphological retention. However, little is known about gravity erosion processes given the difficulty in monitoring, quantitative assessment and conservation of these processes resulting from their high randomness and the non-linear correlation among their impacting factors. Our study reviewed the literature published in last decades and analyzed the recent research progress in the systematic classification, monitoring methods, process and spatial-temporal pattern, influencing factors and underlying mechanisms and modeling of mass movement on the Loess Plateau. Contemporary studies have yielded some meaningful findings, providing a solid foundation for further work. However, the overall research progress in the field is still limited and some crucial research needs have yet been addressed. For an example, little work has been done to develop a systematic classification system for the loess plateau gravity process, or to assess gravity process over large areas, or to study the relationship between gravity and its influencing factors and its underlying mechanical mechanisms. This eventually limits the development of process-based models for gravity process. In the future, accurate measurement techniques, such as 3S technology should be employed along with traditional field observations to monitor long-term gravity process over large areas (e.g. catchment). Based on the measured data, further studies should be undertaken to understand the process and mechanism of gravity, develop systematic classification systems and models of gravity and integrate the gravity model into existing soil erosion models.
