While Hawke was personally flawed and acknowledged his failings as a husband and father, hewas a very effective prime minister who brought people together, established a model foreffective leadership and remade Australia for the modern era. The girls noticed Hawke andshouted: "Bob, come and join us!" Hawke was able to bend themachinery of government to implement Labor's policies while persuading his party'sconstituency to stick with the government and was also able to win support from the otherside of politics.
