- Abstract
Background: Histamine intolerance (HIT) is a gastrointestinal disorder associated with and impairment of ability to metabolize ingested histamine. Due to the absence of a perfectly reliable diagnostic test and the variability of clinical symptoms, HIT is often misdiagnosed. Objective: In the review, we present routinely used laboratory diagnostic tests as well as a range of newer and prospective laboratory examinations for the diagnosis of HIT. Methods: All of the information contained in this publication has been drawn from journal titles and full texts of articles published in the bibliographic databases PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science. Results: Quantitative determination of diamine oxidase (DAO) in serum is the first choice in the diagnosis of HIT. Other laboratory tests that can make diagnostic of HIT easier are determination of the total degradation capacity of histamine, the 50-minute skin-prick test, or the determination of DAO in the intestinal mucosa. Analysis of histamine metabolites in urine is a comfortable examination for the patient, but currently it is used only in the research field. Conclusion: Despite several investigative procedures to identity HIT, the only reliable diagnostic and therapeutic way is low-histamine diet.
