- Abstract
The foundation of San Juan del Puerto, documented in the 15th century, led to the creation of an enclave on the left bank of the Tinto River. As a consequence, its facilities as a port reached the largest volume of product shipments on the coast of Huelva in the Modern Age. The Dukes of Medina Sidonia in 1468 granted them a “carta puebla” with the recognition of the importance of this place as a strategic area in national and international maritime communications. The transcendence that it achieved during the Taifa kingdom of Niebla and the Roman occupation is clearly noted in historical archives and archaeological records. In addition, the navigability of the Tinto Estuary would contribute to essential events such as the installation of the family of Christopher Columbus in a estate located next to its port before the discovery of the New World.
