- Abstract
Within the study of history, French Hispanism is one the most important in the world, and undoubtedly the most productive in terms of medieval history. This is nothing new, but is part of an age-old scholarly tradition. The last twenty years, however, have been the most prolific and varied ever. The themes addressed by French researchers reveal the multifaceted nature of medieval studies in France; these themes have been adapted to varying degrees to the Hispanic sphere. Thus, while subject areas such as the economy or urban studies have fallen into decline, others, such as cultural history, have enjoyed a notable increase in popularity. Covering the entire peninsula, from the Al-Andalus to the Christian kingdoms, topics such as writing, politics, symbols, the role of the Church, religious wars, the crusades, travel and territoriality, have assumed prominence and contributed to greater knowledge of medieval Spain.
