- Abstract
In March 2020, as soon as the first cases of COVID-19were reported in Africa, most governments of Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) member States took concerted action to effectively fight the pandemic. As a result of these measures, there has been a lack of trust among the population in some countries. In Burkina Faso, the media and the press have reported holding of protest marches and street blockades by workers in the informal and formal sector to demand the reopening of the central market of Ouagadougou (Roodwooko) and other small markets commonly called yaars. In this context, this qualitative study was conducted in the city of Ouagadougou with 167 workers to gather their perceptions of risk-taking during the period of restricted individual/collective freedoms. The results showed that the precariousness of social living conditions forced most workers to seek out basic food products. It also appeared that the lack of money led some workers in the informal and formal sectors to continue their activity despite the restrictive measures (containment). Finally, the need for social integration led many workers to participate in various officially prohibited social events (funerals, weddings, baptisms, funerals) to maintain the bonds of mutual aid, solidarity, and social group cohesion.
