- Abstract
This article focuses on the sponsorship of various sports events by John Hancock Financial Services Inc.. Top-tier sponsors of the Olympics, such as Visa, American Express, and John Hancock Financial Services Inc., an investment and life insurance company, believe that their brands are enhanced through their alliance with the games. Visa representative Joe Carberry claims that after they became a global sponsor in 1986, consumers began to talk about Visa in the same terms they talked about the Olympics. When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) failed to properly protect the Olympic and, by extension, the John Hancock brands during the Salt Lake City bribery scandal, it was not surprising that John Hancock's president and CEO David D'Alessandro threatened to withdraw their sponsorship of the games. Today, those at John Hancock brag that they are responsible for the IOC's ethics clause that allows sponsors to withdraw in cases of IOC-related scandal. John Hancock, like most corporations, willingly engages in cultural work and will even take economic hits to avoid controversy or bad publicity.
