- Abstract
In today's global economy, corporations, according to their unique vision and mission statements, follow varying diversification strategies. The following manuscript discusses two common diversification strategies often employed by large firms, either an unrelated diversification strategy or a related diversification strategy. Although there are many differences that result from these two strategies, this paper focuses on some potential contrasting social psychological differences in top management teams that stem from a related diversification strategy versus an unrelated diversification strategy. It is asserted that certain intra-organizational social psychological differences may often be present, dependent upon on which diversification strategy a firm chooses to follow. Social psychological concepts, including control via competition, groupthink, group cohesiveness, insulation, and autocratic leadership, are discussed as potential forces causing adverse organizational effects. Formal propositions are developed concerning how the organizational structure may affect the ethical behavior of top management teams leading to irresponsible behavior.
