- Title
Lactational amenorrhoea method as a contraceptive.
- Authors
Jackson, Karen B.
- Abstract
Lactational Amenorrhoea Method or LAM, is a highly effective form of natural family planning, if used correctly, it is over 98% effective (Szarewski and Guillebaud 2000), which rates very favourably when compared to other forms of contraception. Yet midwives appear to be reluctant to include this choice of contraception when discussing this issue postnatally with breastfeeding women. This article will look at the evidence to support the efficacy of LAM, the criteria women need to follow (the Bellgio consensus statement) to comply with LAM, some common fears and misconceptions surrounding LAM and the professional responsibilities of the midwife in relation to postnatal contraception advice.
