- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of orbital fat decompression and observe the shortterm results. In order to decrease the amount of proptosis, fat was removed from the temporal and medial compartments of the bilateral upper eyelids via transcutanous surgery and transconjunctival surgery in the right lower lid of a 35-year-old man with Graves ophthalmopathy. Short-term results were reviewed at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. Thirty mm proptosis was measured preoperatively; 23 mm proptosis was measured in the right eye and 26 mm proptosis was measured in the left eye postoperatively. A 2 mm opening remained in the left eye with eye closure. Limitation of the upper eyelid in downward gaze and conjunctival and scleral conjection were all diminished postoperatively. With the exception of compressive optic neuropathy, decreasing orbital volume via orbital fat removal produces satisfactory results in regression of proptosis.
