- Abstract
This article explores the French musical entertainment, Le Triomphe de l'Amour, which premiered in 1681 to celebrate a royal marriage. It discusses the impact of this work on two English dramatic operas, The Prophetess and The Fairy Queen, and sheds new light on the Paris Opéra production and the authorship of The Fairy Queen libretto. The text also examines the influence of French theatrical practices on Thomas Betterton, an English actor and theater manager, and his incorporation of French elements into his own productions. Additionally, it explores the musical connections between Henry Purcell's compositions and Jean-Baptiste Lully's score for Le Triomphe de l'Amour, suggesting that Purcell's music shows evidence of emulation and borrowing from Lully's work. Overall, the article provides insight into the artistic practices and influences of late 17th-century English music and theater.
