- Authors
Montgomery, Marianne
- Abstract
The article discusses the Dutchwoman figure as prostitute in the early modern English stage. Topics covered include the general critical focus on Franceschina in John Marston's play "The Dutch Courtesan" (1604), the Dutch-pretending Englishwoman Luce in the anonymous play "The London Prodigal" (1603-4), and her layers of identity beyond those in dramatic fiction. Also noted are the play's use of foreign disguise as a key plot element, and its satiric treatment of fashion and convention.
