- Abstract
Metal thin films and metal nanostructures find a key role in the actual nanotechnology revolution. They can be engineered for nanoelectronics, plasmonics, and sensing applications. However, the crucial step towards reliable technological applications of metal‐based nanodevices is the development of simple, low‐cost, versatile and heighthroughput nanofabrication methodologies. The Feature Article by Ruffino and Grimaldi (pp. 1662–1684) presents the idea of the exploitation of the controlled thin films dewetting process as a nanofabrication approach for metal nanostructures on surfaces fullfilling these requirements. The basics of the dewetting phenomenology as well as the most recent experimental results are presented and reviewed. Particular attention is devoted to: laser based approaches for thin metal films dewetting, metal films dewetting on curved surfaces, and dewetting of template‐confined metal films.
