- Abstract
This article focuses on gastrointestinal malignant melanoma. Malignant melanoma is a rare cancer comprising only 1%-3% of reported malignancies, but is responsible for 50%-70% of metastatic lesions to the small bowel. Gastrointestinal metastases from malignant melanoma are diagnosed premortem in only 4% of patients. The stomach is involved in 7% of patients, the small intestine in 35%, and the large bowel in 14.5%. Gastrointestinal malignant melanoma has three pathologic types: nodular, circumscribed, and infiltrative. Infiltrating lesions are usually single and pigmented, they are more likely to present with gastrointestinal bleeding.
