- Title
Behavioral Epigenetics: How Nurture Shapes Nature.
- Authors
Powledge, Tabitha M.
- Abstract
In this article the author discusses aspects of behavioral epigenetics and the role that experience and social environment play in development. She notes that identical twins, who seem to have genes identical in nature, can be unalike in behavior, personality, and health. She suggest that the reason for these differences is epigenetics, which is the way in which nurture shapes nature. Topics include an overview of role of learning and remembering, parental influences, and genomic imprinting on behavior. A diagram illustrating various factors and biological processes that affect epigenetic mechanisms, such as environmental chemicals, diet, and aging, is also presented. INSET: Technical explanations.
