- Abstract
"A Liberal-Labour Lady: The Times and Life of Mary Ellen Spear Smith" by Veronica Strong-Boag is a biography that explores the life of Mary Ellen Smith, the first female member of the British Columbia legislature and the first woman cabinet member in the British Empire. The book examines the intersection of class and gender politics in Britain and Canada during the turn of the twentieth century. While Smith fought for the democratic rights of workers and women, the author argues that her legacy was shaped by settler-colonial privilege. The biography also highlights Smith's advocacy for women's political inclusion while excluding Asians from Canada and disregarding issues of Indigenous dispossession.
