- Abstract
In light of growing societal polarization, classical forms of liberal democratic education, which aim to foster consensus and compromise, have been increasingly called into question. As a response to the perceived weaknesses of these approaches, theorists within both the German and English-speaking educational research communities have formulated principles of an agonistic approach to democratic education. On this view, a political form of anger should be cultivated in students so that they can be prepared to carry out the unavoidable conflicts of political life. In this essay, I explore the psychological, pedagogical and political implications of an agonistic approach to democratic education, with special attention to the role of political anger. The analysis suggests that, although anger can fulfill various political functions, it should not be actively fostered in democratic education on account of its troubling psychological risks. In conclusion, I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a transformative approach to grappling with political anger in democratic education.
