- Abstract
While retirement under age 65 has dramatically increased and continues to increase during the last two decades, there is a trend among college faculty toward retiring later than people in other occupations. Colleges are also facing the uncapping of retirement age for tenured faculty on December 31, 1993, under an exemption to the 1986 amendment to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Colleges need to know the variables that affect a faculty member's decision to accept or reject a voluntary retirement offer. The authors of this article examined these variables. Overall, the authors found two motivational variables with the greatest influence on the retirement decision: the desire to maintain the status quo and resist change, and the attractiveness of retirement. Meetings with school administrators, paid advisers, family and colleagues have the greatest are behavioral variables with the greatest predictive value. Recommendations for colleges and universities to successfully meet the challenges of the next decade are presented.
