- Abstract
Two years of ethnographic research and participation in the Butler Sweet Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, revealed the church as responsive to the social issues confronting the African American community. At the same time, the church remains roots in a redefined and expanded set of African American cultural traditions. The concept of "African centered traditionalism" is described as a framework for the commonly outreach programs sponsored by the church. Two programs as for youth are cited. This paper, called from approximately two years of observation and participation in Butler Street Baptist church, is a discussion of some of the efforts of this church to be responsive to the needs of its congregation as the members confront the issues of the 21st century, while remaining rooted in a redefined and expanded set of traditions. This paper describes the pastor's own particular political and ideological vision, one which sociologists refer to as "African-centered traditionalism" which has helped to shape the direction of some of the community outreach programs sponsored by the church.
