- Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to explore the expectations of the employees of the Readymade Garments (RMG) sector of Bangladesh to their leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: This is an exploratory qualitative study by face to face and online interviews, observations of the author who is working in the Readymade Garments (RMG) sector of Bangladesh. Data from 150 participants were subjected to content analysis. Findings: The employees expressed several expectations, and these were grouped into three main themes. Surviving the crisis, Navigating through the crisis, and Overcoming the crisis/post-crisis reorganising. These three themes were clustered in sub-themes and finalised the list of variables to generate new hypotheses. Research limitations/implications: A further quantitative research can be used to validate themes and test a conceptual model of effective crisis leadership based on the findings of this paper. Collecting data from other communities at various periods during the COVID-19 epidemic could also be beneficial. Practical implications: It is advised that leadership development programs and organisational norms and values be reviewed to ensure that they align with crisis leadership in the pandemic era. Contribution/Originality/value: This research fills a vacuum in follower-centered perspectives on organisational leadership responses to crises, emphasising the significance of humility, compassion and care in leading employees through tough times.
