- Abstract
Foreign body ingestion in children is a frequent condition (4% of this population). Most of the cases remain asymptomatic, with no complications in 98% of cases. Children tend to accidentally swallow small objects from their environment (coins, disc batteries, toy parts, etc.). Most of these tend to pass through the gastrointestinal tract with no problem, but there are cases that require endoscopic retrieval. It is necessary to foresee which patients can remain without intervention and in which cases endoscopic retrieval of foreign bodies is a necessity. Even though complications are possible, they are rare. We generally tend to overestimate the problem and sometimes intervene with no real indication.
