- Abstract
From 3 April through 9 May 2021, several observations of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) with pale bills were documented in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood of Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland. Unlike other American Crows with typically black bills, these individuals exhibited bills with variable amounts of pale coloration and/or maculations. For some of the observations, the bill appeared somewhat dull yellowish. During the 37-day observation period, one to three crows were present simultaneously. The routine activities of these American Crows were concentrated in a small area of the neighborhood (within the boundary of Sherwood Forest Drive on the east, Randolph Road on the southeast, and Locksley Lane on the southwest). No American Crows with pale bills were observed after 9 May 2021, only breeding, black-billed American Crows. Coincidently, spring 2021 saw the emergence of the Brood X 17-year periodical cicadas, Magicicada Davis spp. (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), which apparently was correlated with the American Crow "pale-billed" condition.
