- Abstract
The article provides an overview of the present computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems used in dentistry and describes the performance criteria of the components involved. Among the material groups available for various CAD/CAM systems are silicate ceramics, aluminum oxide ceramics with glass infiltration, titanium, precious alloys, acrylics of improved strength and castable acrylics. The kinds of digital three-dimensional (3-D) scanning devices for dental use are outlined. Information is also presented on the function of software programs for computer-aided design.
