- Abstract
The aim of this article is to show the different ways in which two young women born and raised in exile fashioned their lives, expressed their identities, and solved their life problems, as well as to touch upon the life nuances of older women brought to foreign shores by the ravages of war. The emphasis in this paper is on two works, as yet little examined, of younger émigré women: Irena Mačiulytė-Guilford's novel "The Embrace" and Eglė Juodvalkė's memoir "Sugar Mountain." In these works a woman's forms of life and expression of identity truly are vividly depicted. Each of the women in the books discussed deals in her own distinct way with living in a two-culture environment. One of them looks at such a way of life optimistically and naturally, seeing in it great possibilities for self-improvement and indulging in freedom; whereas the other sees in it mostly suffering and disappointment. In the case of older women this issue loses its sting. Their existence in an alien environment is made meaningful by the still vibrant memories they've brought with them from Lithuania.
