- Abstract
This document is a response to a commentary on a study about decellularized aortic allografts for pediatric aortic valve replacement. The authors address the concerns raised in the commentary and provide additional context for the study's findings. They explain that the higher rate of reoperation in their study cohort compared to pediatric Ross operations is due to the specific demographic of their cohort, which had a larger number of previous cardiac surgeries and a higher rate of previous aortic valve replacements. The authors view decellularized aortic allografts as a potential therapeutic option for children who are not suitable candidates for a durable Ross operation or mechanical aortic valve replacement. They also mention the potential future use of subcoronary implantation of these allografts. The authors disclose a conflict of interest related to the company that provides the patented service for processing decellularized allografts.
