- Abstract
The essay presents, for the first time, new information on the painter from Piedmont Giovanna Battista Buzano Clemente, called la Clementina (1690-1761): a key figure in the history of portrait painting in Piedmont in the 18th century. The research has revealed previously unknown information on the personal life of the painter and her family and has laid an historically solid and certain foundation for her biography. It was carried out at the Archive of Lodgings in Turin (Turin National Archive, Sezioni Riunite) and at various archives of parishes in Turin. The new research paints the picture of a woman with great human qualities – mother of at least ten daughters and sons, including two priests – and excellent artistic skills. The painter came from a bourgeois family and was under the protection of the Turin court since a very young age. Her ties with painter Giovanni Battista Curlando and architect Filippo Juvarra have been demonstrated. Clementina also painted still lives and altarpieces, and some of her works were deemed worthy of being engraved.
