- Title
Practically a Community: Dynamics of a Small City's Immigrant Community.
- Authors
Barmania, Ayesha
- Abstract
Based on completed original field research, this essay argues that immigrant communities in small cities and towns in Canada are markedly different from the interactions of immigrants in urban areas. Rather than immigrants of homogenous ethnic backgrounds grouping together, in Peterborough, the small immigrant community renders this practice futile. Instead, supportive communities of immigrants from highly varied backgrounds bond together using the local immigrant support organization as a focal point. This community follows the same patterns as a "community of practice" theorized by Wenger (2012).
