The article discusses the impact of trade with Newfoundland on emigration from and migration within Devon, England, focusing on the period of approximately 1600 to 1850. It particularly comments on the impact of Newfoundland's cod fisheries. The author explores seasonal, temporary, and permanent migration. The author also considers apprenticeships in Devon and the local impact of migration on population balances. Different classes of people involved in the trade are considered, including merchants, artisans, bye-boat keepers, and fishing servants.
