- Authors
GLASER, BRIGITTE
- Abstract
The article analyzes Canadian fiction concerning the participation of Canadian men in World War I, primarily focusing on the reasons male protagonists had for joining the war effort. The author also analyzes the ways in which Canadian authors discuss the psychological effects of the war on these characters upon their return home. Novels discussed include "The Underpainter" by Jane Urquhart, "Three Day Road" by Joseph Boyden, and "Deafening" by Frances Itani. Narrative elements such as multiple perspectives and foreshadowing are examined. The author describes how these novels can be seen as revisionist histories of the war.
