- Abstract
The article discusses the way that East German household appliance manufacturers attempted to deal with changing attitudes to energy consumption of private households in the 1970's and 1980's. According to the article, barriers created by the national innovation system of the GDR, as well as the transformation of economic structures since the 1970's, delayed the reorganization of product development. Topics include the East German manufacturers VEB Waschgerätewerk Schwarzenberg and VED dkk Scharfenstein, energy-saving innovations, and research and development engineering in East Germany.
