- Abstract
Man is an intrinsic part of nature. The relationship between the two evolved in a symbiotic manner. Of late, this relationship has become antagonistic. Overuse of environmental capital is one of the major determinants of the growing trade-off between the sustainable use of the environmental capital and economic development. Its consequences have also been widely reported and possible solutions have been proposed. Linkages between economy and environment have been recasted from different perspectives. Studying the causality between cultural diversity and biodiversity has emerged as a new research paradigm. Cultural and biological diversities have coevolved with the natural and metaphysical worlds that surrounded them. While the causality between the two is obvious, its direction is not conclusive. It is suggested that preservation of cultural diversity could play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity. This needs to be explored. Against this backdrop, this paper attempts to understand the relationship between biodiversity and cultural diversity. This paper also explores the possibility of preserving biodiversity through cultural diversity. It concludes that appropriate measures should be put in place so as to take advantage of the sublime features of cultural diversity in preserving our biodiversity.
