- Authors
Carroll, Royce; Cox, Gary W.; Pachón, Mónica
- Abstract
The article aims to investigate how political parties create the rule by which legislatures choose their leaders. It informs that the symbiotic relationship between the rules of electoral competition and the players in the competition affects each other's survival. It discovers two main patterns on how political parties get a smaller or larger share of mega-seats such as cabinet portfolios, board seats and committee chair. First, the majoritarian bonus in the apportionment of mega-seats tends to be larger in systems with a smaller effective number of parties. Second, the majoritarian bonus in the apportionment of mega-seats tends to be larger if the effective number of parties will be controlled.
