- Abstract
This article, the first of a series of two, presents an analysis of the text of Mark 7:1-13, focusing on the term contained in verse eight - "the tradition of men". It seeks to analyze what "tradition" it is that receives such severe condemnation by Jesus, by examining where it comes from: the pharisees and scribes. It also examines the apparent contradiction in the usage of the term in other biblical passages where tradition is both condemned and commanded to be kept, especially in the Pauline writings. The author indicates that there is only a double usage of the term, elucidated by its context, and presents six characteristics of the tradition that is condemned: (1) It is part of a generally accepted religious perspective/viewpoint (though restricted to a specific community or region); (2) It is destitute of a real authoritative basis; (3) It is proclaimed as being the only acceptable way of behavior; (4) It is totally empty with respect to true spiritual significance; (5) It deviates from God's commandments, and (6) It contradicts God's commandments. The author concludes by alerting that it is easy to conclude that this incident (also recorded in Matthew 15:1-9) is only a historical record so that we may know the religious character and practice of the Pharisees, but that these characteristics taken from the text actually have various contemporary applications that will be addressed in the second part of this article.
