- Abstract
The article presents an examination of the popularity of colonial autobiographies and testimonies in England during the middle of the 19th century. It focuses on works written by middle-class female emigrants who conveyed the realities of pioneer life in British North America to members of their social class in Great Britain. The author explores the autobiography "Roughing it in the Bush," by Susanna Moodie and discusses how the book promotes life in the New World as one that offers a spiritual and religious quest for a better life to families experiencing social and financial problems in Great Britain.
