- Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of the strength training with different number of sets, but in the same total volume after three weeks training verifying which methodology was more efficient in 1RM test. Materials and Methods: The sample was composed by 23 subjects (28 ± 5 years; 79 ± 10 kg; 179 ± 10 cm) healthy and trained in strength training at least two years. The 1RM test was made in four distinct days in pre and post training. The subjects were divided in two groups (G1 and G2). The G1 executed 3 X 10 repetitions with 80% of the 1RM and G2 5 X 6 repetitions with 80% of the 1RM in each selection exercise. The strength training was made in three weekly sessions totalizing 36 sessions. The 1RM evolution in pre and post training intra e inter groups was made by 2-way ANOVA. Results: The results showed that strength training in the same volume and intensity, divided in different number of sets and repetitions during three months in trained individuals, showed no significant difference in 1RM test. In comparison in each group separately, both groups showed significant gains in all exercises to lower body but not to upper body exercises. The exception was the lat pull down in G2. Conclusion: We conclude the important in strength training seems to be the total training volume.
