- Title
The gratitude paradox.
- Authors
Chisholm‐Burns, Marie; Formica, Richard N.
- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of the "gratitude paradox" in healthcare, using examples from the field of transplantation and other contexts. The authors argue that there is an expectation for disadvantaged and vulnerable populations to be grateful for minimal improvements in their lives, and that expressing a desire for more and better care options is often met with backlash. They call on healthcare professionals to validate the conflicting emotions that patients experience and strive to offer improved treatment options. The authors also emphasize the need for empathy, collaboration, and resistance against societal forces that hinder progress in healthcare.
