This article discusses the contribution of harmonic motives to the structural and expressive cohesion of Franz Schubert's sonata forms. It elaborates the referential, modulatory and gestural functions of harmonic motives. The first movement of the String Quartet in D minor, D. 810, in the music "Death and Maiden" is detailed to demonstrate the way the functions work together.
