- Authors
Wignell, Edna
- Abstract
The article presents examples of the depiction of women in the mass media in Australia. The author observes that the need to achieve is not regarded as applying equally to men and women. Specifically, she claims that men are valued for their achievement and women for their appearance. She also cites the differences between the reporting of men's and women's achievements in work and sport. Moreover, she emphasizes that men are treated seriously and women are often trivialized by the inclusion of irrelevancies.
