- Title
Microbiology: Life in the lost city.
- Abstract
The article reports on a study of bacteria and archaea living in the Lost City Hydrothermal Field, a collection of deep-water hydrothermal vents in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The bacteria and archaea that live in the vents' chimneys were analyzed by William Brazelton and his colleagues at the University of Washington in Seattle. The team took more than 200,000 DNA sequences for a specific region. They found that sequences occurring in young chimneys are more abundant in older chimneys.
