- Abstract
Via I Stimmung i , the I becomes "absorbent and creative"; I Stimmung i , just like I Influx & Efflux i , "sketch[es] out another mode of subjectivity and action." In order to " I add i something to the aesthetic" within the "formative process" ([1]) of "influx and efflux", I would like to engage not only with Walt Whitman, but with Jane Bennett on the aesthetic category of the German word I Stimmung i , which is not widely used in English-language criticism and lacks a one-word equivalent in this language. Understood in this way, I Stimmung i serves to develop not only a person-to-person sympathy (towards the Hispanic workers), but a cross-species-sympathy (towards the slaughtered pigs), building on the "risk of infection" (97). In the poem is addressed not only to the mourning pigs and ailing humans whose arms and legs are prickling, but also to those "sick" people who are responsible for this industrial livestock farming and slaughter - and who are neither open and attentive, nor susceptible to others and to welcoming influences, and who therefore contradict the idea of ecological democracy.
