The article discusses issues related to adoption in the Luso-Brazilian empire during 1765-1822. Adoption laws prevailing in the Portuguese society in the eighteenth century are discussed. Arguments made by various Brazilian historians, including Renato Venâncio and Maria Luiza Marcílio towards the need of proper legislation related to adoption are highlighted.
