- Title
Preparing Youth for the World of Work: Labor Relations Learning and Work Experience Programs.
- Authors
Cooper, David N.
- Abstract
This article focuses on labor relations learning and work experience programs in the U.S., as of September 1982. Distinct from career education, which adds job-relevant content to the curriculum with a net effect of providing additional education, work experience programs largely substitute "hands-on" or "real life" work experience for basic education, threatening to narrow future work options and occupational mobility for youth they serve. The author examines the impact of work site placements. To explore the impact of work site placements and other factors which may affect students' attitude on labor relations, a written questionnaire was administered to the entire junior and senior classes at Bayriver High School. Students who participated in Bayriver's career education programs clearly substituted time spent at the work site for time spent in the academic classroom. The questionnaire focused on labor relations issues and the economic, political, and ideological considerations often associated with them. Multiple choice answers took into account current operational methods for solving worker-employer problems and worker-related citizenship problems, both at the workplace and in the context of other social institutions.
