- Abstract
The article discusses the duties and opportunities in protecting native sacred sites situated on public lands in the U.S. It describes the function of scared sites in American Indian religious traditions and highlights why these sites were located on federal public lands. It discusses the legal bases for evaluating sacred site protection before the landmark Cave Rock case and the effect of the case's decision on the legal landscape. Further, it suggests an analytical framework for the evaluation of the agency's action affecting Native American sacred sites.
