This study deals with the issues surrounding the influence of “Maffie” members on the operation of the Czechoslovak state during the first years of its existence (1919-1921). Attention is primarily focused on Přemysl Šámal the man. The Maffie significantly contributed towards the formation of the Castleʼs position as a power group. This relationship was personified in Přemysl Šámalʼs activities at the Office of the President of the Republic. Because the Maffie was not just an association of people solely linked by the existence of Austria-Hungary as a common foe, but the individual members of the Maffie were also brought together by various friendships, interests and professional and political ties. This also applied to members of the Maffie inner circle grouped around Přemysl Šámal. Hence the end of the First World War did not stop these links from being maintained and developed. The Maffie figured as a group of individuals who were organized to a considerable extent not only in their own eyes, but also in the eyes of the public. Their centre moved with Přemysl Šámal to the Office of the President of the Republic at Prague Castle. Despite some disagreements, the Maffie can be said to have been an influential group of individuals that represented the close collaboration between the domestic and foreign resistance, a group that was independent to a considerable ex - tent of party political views and hence one of the important power bases behind President Masarykʼs policies.
