- Abstract
This article, titled "12 Years of Net Zero Living," discusses the experience of a dual military couple who designed and built a net zero-energy home for their retirement. The couple followed a Passive House philosophy and conducted extensive research and design to create an all-electric house with a super-insulated shell and passive solar energy. The construction included features such as a concrete slab foundation, double-studded walls with high insulation, and a roof with closed-cell foam and fiberglass insulation. The house also incorporated solar PV systems, solar hot water, geothermal energy, and an energy recovery ventilator. The article highlights the performance, economics, and lessons learned from living in a net zero home for 12 years.
