- Abstract
Braking systems are one of the most important vehicle components. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted to heat energy by friction between the brake lining and the rotating brake disc. Brake discs work under very difficult thermo-mechanical conditions due to high temperature and wear. As most commercial discs have high rate and low braking performance, there is a need for development and manufacturing of new discs-brake linings to reduce wear and to increase braking performance. In this study, a sample cast iron discs with ventilation channels, coated with NiCrBSi powder by the thermal spraying and melting method were investigated. The braking performance of disc and the sample coated discs was tested according to SAE J2430 test standards. It was found out that the NiCrBSi coated disc exhibited a lower wear rate and a higher friction coefficient than the original disc. As a result, the NiCrBSi coated disc could be better alternative for new generation brake discs in vehicles t han the original one.
