- Abstract
The article presents a discussion on the reformation of the Chinese writing. The Chinese writing is one of the most ancient of the world, and of those it is the only one that is still effective. A fifth part of the world-wide population uses every day, and in addition to the Chinese, numerous people learn it. During the years between 1956 and 1964, the government of China promoted a reform of the Chinese writing. Thousands of traditional Chinese characters were simplified in order that people could learn Chinese with less difficulty. Since then, two types of standardized characters coexist: complicated or the traditional one, and the simplified one. The simplified characters were object of a long debate and the controversies still continue. The simplified writing is being used in the People's Republic of China for several decades, and the discussion about the simplification follows. No one knows until when and until where the discussion will finally reach. Nevertheless, the exists hope to return to the old forms. According to studies, the uses of the characters simplified in China is diminishing.
