- Abstract
The use of medicinal plants as anthelmintic is widespread among the population, but to prove its real effectiveness, tests should be done. In this context, this study evaluated, in vitro, the viability of Ascaris suum eggs exposed to the extracts, alcohol, hexane and ethyl acetate of Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC. and the aqueous extract of Chenopodium ambrosioides L., contributing to the development of new herbal medicines useful for the treatment of parasitic diseases. Two positive controls were used, with a drug known ovicidal, thiabendazole and another using the widely used drug in the treatment of parasitic diseases, Albendazole in the concentration of 10 parts per million (ppm), a negative control with sulfuric acid (H2SO4 0.1 N) extracts without interference and to verify the possible interference with 1% DMSO, a parallel experiment was performed. The experiments showed that none of the tested plants have two action against eggs of A. suum. The results confirm that only the thiabendazole has ovicidal action, not allowing the embryonated eggs. The sulfuric acid and 1% dimethyl sulfoxide did not interfere in embryonated eggs. Although the plant extracts tested are not ovicidal, other formulations that may improve the activity of plant extracts as well as tests on the motility of the larvae and adult worms should be made for other efficacy parameters can be analyzed and tested.
