- Abstract
Music Therapy is a tridimensional therapy in a polyphonic relation between three main components: science, interpersonal relationship and art. As a core family, it takes care of the client in multidimensional and unlimited ways. Science plays the role of a father figure. The interpersonal relationship is creating, like a good and caring mother, a non-threatening atmosphere for the client. Music, as a form of art, plays the role of a creative child, inspiring and facilitating the process to self-anamorphosis (Psaltopoulou, 2012). Thus, music therapy, as a core family, could be a complete therapy (Psaltopoulou, 2012). Furthermore it provides the safe and warm place, like a family, for the music therapists to discover new ways to relate to music, deriving inspiration from the human being and the dynamics of human relationships. The music therapist also experiences anamorphosis in his/her relationship to music. No wonder the results of a statistic research, show that, Music Therapy is effective: (1) regardless the pathology of the subjects; (2) with severe pathology conditions; (3) regardless the co-practice of other therapies such as Occupation Therapy, Speech Therapy and Psychotherapy. Music Therapy can be a main therapy (Psaltopoulou, Micheli & Kavardinas 2012). This article aims to map out, at a theoretical level, how music therapy improvisation enables child development through the interpretations of phonic and aphonic cry by the trained music therapist. The methodology for this research is phenomenological. It structures and elaborates on the findings of clinical case studies, the research conducted by music therapists and research on the training of music therapists. Psychoanalytic theory and archetypal Greek mythology are used as points of theoretical analysis and terminology to explain the phenomena which appear to have a universal character for the clients, the therapists and the process.
