- Title
The Merchant Formerly Known as Jew: Redefining the Rhetoric of Merchantry in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice.
- Authors
Rich, Jennifer
- Abstract
The article focuses on the rhetoric of merchantry in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." It looks back on the status of the Jews in the early modern period stating that the English perception of the Jews was overdetermined by England's experience with Jewish money-lending in the medieval period. Also mentioned are the debates about the effects of the medieval English Jewish community and its economic activities. It also notes that the sudden emergence of the monetary economy threatened old Christian values in those times.
